Timken’s Art of Fashion

Timken’s Art of Fashion

Iconic designer Zandra Rhodes and her honorary “Pink List” committee judged the recent Art of Fashion costume design competition at the Timken Museum of Art. However, in the end, it was impossible to pick just one. Adam Alonso and Caitlin Doolittle, graduate students at UCLA’s David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design, both won $5,000 scholarships for their elaborate half-scale costumes inspired by Thomas Gainsborough’s 1788 painting, A Peasant Smoking at a Cottage Door, on loan to the Timken from UCLA’s Hammer Museum. The recent awards celebration, chaired by UCLA alums Lori and Bill Walton, featured remarks by Oscar-nominated costume designer and professor Deborah Nadoolman Landis, founding director and chair of the Copley Center. “It’s never just about the clothes,” she told the crowd. “It’s about the story.” Called the design students’ Tim Gunn, Nadoolman Landis is married to film director and producer Michael Landis.    Andrea Naversen
