Tiny Dancer, Big Roles

Published

California Ballet Company’s 45th Sapphire Anniversary Season will be presented at San Diego Civic Theatre, beginning in October with Dracula, followed by The Nutcracker over the holidays, and Swan Lake in May of next year. Among the dancers in the 2012-2013 season is Rebecca Correia, a Cardiff by-the-Sea native whose interest in dance began at a very young age. “When I’d go to the grocery store with my mom, I would dance down the aisles and sing,” Correia explains. “One day the cashier told my mom to put me in dance class. I started by studying tap, jazz, and ballet.” By age ten, Correia was ready for pointe, a big step in a dancer’s life. She began attending the California Ballet School in the summer of 2000, and is now a graduate.

“Growing up in the California Ballet School gave me the opportunity to watch the professional dancers rehearse and perform. I idolized all the dancers and hoped that one day I would be a dancer, too,” she says. “I am so grateful for the wonderful opportunities the company has given me to perform amazing roles and share my art with the public.”

Following additional training at Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, Summer Dance Lab in Washington, and Kaatsbaan Extreme Ballet, Correia trained with the Boston Ballet for the 2007-2008 season, and performed with the Boston Ballet Ensemble in works by Foresythe, Ashton, Balanchine, and Bournonville. In 2008 she rejoined California Ballet Company and was promoted to soloist in 2010. Correia graduated with honors from the University of San Diego with a degree in business administration and is a certified Gyrontic instructor.

As for what’s on the horizon? Correia says, “I would like to continue dancing with the California Ballet Company. When I retire, I plan to attend graduate school to obtain a doctorate in physical therapy. Through dancing and studying Gyrotonic, I have fostered great understanding and appreciation for the body.”    MIA STEFANKO
