Well-Known Residents Who Love Carlsbad

Published

Carlsbad has an impressive list of well-known residents past and present, including Olympic gold medalists Shaun White and Staciana Stitts, skateboard legend Tony Hawk, Switchfoot band member Chad Butler, and football great Marcus Allen, to name a few. Several stars of television’s popular reality shows currently call the city home. Here are some of their favorite ways to spend time in their hometown.

J.J. Carrell & Constance Ramos, The Amazing Race & Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, respectively
Carrell was part of the second-place team on the most recent season of The Amazing Race. The border patrol agent also plays quarterback for the San Diego Enforcers, a full-tackle football team made up of law enforcement professionals. Ramos was on the makeover team that rebuilt the Encinitas home of Brian Wofford in 2004. The two met that same year when Carrell submitted a tape for a home makeover. The couple says one of their favorite Carlsbad spots is St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, where they were married seven years ago.

“One of our Carlsbad favorites is definitely the Beach Terrace Hotel,” notes Ramos. “It’s a beautiful oceanfront getaway that just isn’t too far away. We love going to Ponto Beach, too. Tin Leaf and Broken Yolk are some of our favorite places for a quick meal. Of course, we love La Costa Spa.”

Melissa Maggiore, Food Network’s Family Style

Siblings Melissa and Joey Maggiore starred in Food Network’s Family Style, which documented food, family, and fun in Tommy V’s Urban Kitchen. “Owning and operating [a restaurant] leaves very little time for vacations,” says Maggiore. “That is why I feel so blessed to live in Carlsbad. How lucky am I to live in a place where others come year-round to vacation? Whenever I am off, my kids and I enjoy exploring Carlsbad as if we, too, are visitors. We like to escape to the beach and explore the tide pools. During the school year we pack up a picnic dinner and head to Ponto Beach and watch the sunset. At that time of night we usually can see dolphins, which Marcella and Francesco love! Every year the kids look forward to the Carlsbad Street Faire, which is unlike any other in the county. It is gigantic, and besides the great food, fun shops, and entertainment, we see many friends.”

“My boyfriend lives in the village, and we love to walk on the beach, window shop, and enjoy the sunset and a glass of wine at Vigilucci’s Steak House. When there I tend to run into many of my customers and they are always shocked to find me at my ‘supposed’ competition. Carlsbad is a small community, and I love to support the local business owners (and fellow Italians). We all have a sense of support for one another, so on my night off I would much rather support another local than leave and go elsewhere. Carlsbad Village has a true sense of neighborhood, which seems to be missing in so many areas today. On Sunday afternoons the kids love to go to the farmers’ market and head over to Las Olas for Mexican food (their salsa and chips are addicting!) and then finish off the day with a great piece of chocolate, hot cocoa, and coffee at the Carlsbad Chocolate Bar on State Street. Let’s face it. Being a Carlsbad resident, we have a vacation in every day off!”
