Grunion Run

Published

Join Birch Aquarium for a must-see ocean adventure. Through early June, observe the mysterious grunion spawn on the beaches of La Jolla on certain nights. Following high tides, hundreds of the small, silvery fish ride the waves onto shore for this remarkable mating ritual, which only happens in Southern California. While on the beach, female grunion bury themselves halfway in the sand to lay eggs, while males wrap themselves protectively around the females to fertilize their eggs. Both then catch a wave to return to sea. Birch Aquarium at Scripps naturalists will guide participants through an unforgettable night that includes a rare opportunity to witness grunion eggs hatch before their eyes. The awe-inspiring experience continues with a moonlight beach exploration to witness the grunion run, nature willing. The program is $12 per person, ages six and up. Reservations must be made in advance. Remaining dates in the 2012 season include: May 7, May 22, and June 6. (858/534-7336, aquarium.ucsd.edu)
