Chris Cantore Guest Favorites 2012

Published

We asked several San Diego notables to share their favorite things about the beloved town we call home, and their interpretations turned out to be quite varied and personal. Here are some of the things that make our celebrity guests tick.

Chris Cantore, multimedia surfer, on-air at 102.1 KPRi & sdcentric.com

Best Shoes: I’ve worn nothing but Sanuk sandals and sidewalk surfers for over a decade. Thanks to Del Mar’s Jeff Kelley, my feet glide and smile on a daily basis.

Best Resale Shop: Home to the largest collection of used, vintage surfboards (including Skip Frye longboards), I could spend hours — and thousands of dollars — in Bird’s Surf Shed (1091 West Morena Blvd).

Favorite U.S. Destination: Maui, Hawaii. Married there in 2004 and it’s one of my top destinations on the planet. In fact, I have a huge tiki statue tattooed on my right leg to remind me of the islands.

Favorite Local Tourist Attraction: The Pacific Ocean. Step aside Sea World, LegoLand, and the San Diego Zoo, nothing beats San Diego’s epic coastline full of world-renowned surf breaks, hiking trails, and pristine beaches. Also, support sandiego.surfrider.org.

Best Local Nightlife Spot: Craft & Commerce in Little Italy. Hailed by Food & Wine as one of the 50 Best Bars in America, C&C is an anti-vodka urban dwelling specializing in top notch craft cocktails, amazing food, tremendous vibe, and handlebar mustaches.

Best New Restaurant: Carnitas Snack Shack in North Park. Look for the giant pig on the roof, grab a spot in line, and pork out on carnitas tacos, their signature pork sandwich, and the best BLT I’ve ever consumed.

Favorite Restaurant: The Tractor Room in Hillcrest. Walking distance from the Hash House (+ the same owners), I love brunchin’ at the Tractor Room for a hearty meal, impeccable service, and ridiculously awesome cocktails — the Bloody Mary’s are a work of art.

Best Live Music Venue: A fan of the venue for decades, the current crew at the BUT (Belly Up Tavern) has been producing some of the best shows in San Diego the last 3-5 years. I’m literally blown away by their concert calendar every month.

Best Local Artist: Rob Crow. One half of Pinback (+ the leader of a dozen other projects), Crow recently released a solo record — He Thinks He’s People — that is pure indie bliss.

Best Local TV Personality: My man Loren Nancarrow, at Fox 5 San Diego. Forever a fan, and a friend, Loren is the real deal (and a fellow eco-friendly family man).

Best Local Nonprofit: Providing resources and exposure to emerging artists and musicians, I am a huge fan of sezio.org. Zack and his crew do amazing work and throw some of the best events in town.
