We Got Annie

Published

“Tomorrow, tomorrow” — oops, just getting ready for Annie, now playing at San Diego Junior Theatre through November 13. Annie is back. We all know her as the buoyant Depression-era orphan determined to locate the parents who abandoned her years before and left her at the doorstep of a New York City orphanage. That institution is run by the villainous Miss Hannigan, who carries out one evil plan after another. Of course, Annie foils the dastardly Miss Hannigan’s mean acts. She also befriends President Franklin Roosevelt and is given a new home by billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks. The very successful musical is based on the long-running and much loved comic strip by Harold Gray. The Chicago Tribune got it right when it wrote: “Every family should get the chance to introduce their kid to the redhead with the pipes, the scene-stealing pooch, the benevolent bald-headed capitalist. It’s a rite of cultural passage.” (619/239-8355, www.juniortheatre.com)      DARLENE G. DAVIES
