Broadway San Diego celebrates its 35th anniversary during the 2011-2012 season. For the happy occasion, Nederlander has pulled together a delightful lineup of shows that guarantees variety in style and subject matter. Every theatre enthusiast will find some tantalizing theatrical offering. Here’s an example of the huge contrast in shows: Mary Poppins August 10-28 and Blue Man Group September 20-25. The Civic Theatre production of Mary Poppins is part of a national Broadway tour. Of course, this very popular musical offers beloved songs and an irresistible story, but also some new entrancing dance numbers. Those who’ve seen the Blue Man Group in Las Vegas know it merits repeat attendance. The talent of the amazing cast is marvelous and baffling at the same time. Comedy, music, physical skill, and technology combine to create a powerfully entertaining experience. Looking forward, Hair has been revived and will be in the Civic October 18-23. This richly realized reincarnation won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival in 2009, and its groundbreaking rock score has been discovered by a new generation.
