The Winston School

The Winston School is a college preparatory program that offers hope and success for children with learning differences in grades 4 through 12. A group of pediatricians and parents in San Diego founded the school in 1988 for bright children whose needs were not being met in traditional school settings.

Since opening, The Winston School has educated nearly a thousand students, preparing them for college and the working world. The 2010 graduating class was accepted at 15 different colleges and each senior who applied at a two- or four-year school received at least one college acceptance.

The school is the only college preparatory school in San Diego County that provides education to an equal mix of privately enrolled and publicly funded students. Those struggling with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, specific learning disabilities or learning disorders, nonverbal learning disorders, and slow maturation find what they need in the school’s small, safe, and caring environment.

Winston’s faculty specifically creates and individually customizes programs for each student. Small classes and student-teacher ratio of 8:1 create an ideal environment for this personalized approach. Teachers certified in teaching students with learning differences work with each student to identify and develop natural gifts and nurture self-esteem. Counselors, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists also work seamlessly with the faculty to help each student fulfill his or her academic, physical, artistic, social, and emotional potential.

Winston offers a diverse college prep curriculum supported by multi-sensory teaching methods. Academic classes emphasize skill building supported by technology and software to accommodate learning styles, and an extensive arts curriculum provides classic training and a creative outlet as well as opportunities to build character and self-confidence. Electives include painting and drawing, ceramics and sculpture, music, drama, and computer graphics. Students can also choose from a variety of athletic, activity, and workability programs.

Scholarships are available. The Winston School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. For more information please call or email mindy@thewinstonschool.com. 858.259.8155, thewinstonschool.com
