Lambs Players 2011 Offerings

Published

Lamb’s Players Theatre began 40 years ago as a troupe performing “street theatre,” and from that early nucleus of actors grew the current and well regarded resident venue. The breadth of theatrical ventures undertaken has been remarkable. The span of material has covered drama, comedy, musicals, little known properties, original plays, a wide variety of historical periods, and new as well as familiar performers. A first look at the upcoming 2011 season confirms Lamb’s commitment to shows of all genres and with a variety of back stories. Here’s what the Coronado-based LPT has planned for audiences:

The very popular comedy Steel Magnolias opens February 11 and runs through March 20. Truvy and her circle of hair salon clients welcome you to Chinquapin, Louisiana and to their way of life. Laughter ensured.

Book of the Dun Cow then takes the stage from April 8 through May 15. The setting is a mythical age before time. In this treatment of Walter Wangerin’s Newberry Award-winning story, animals band together to fight evil. Guess who wins.

LPT mounts a rousing piece of musical Americana with The Music Man from June 3 through July 10. This “76 Trombones” classic transforms the historic building’s stage into River City with resulting ebullience guaranteed to flow over into the audience. It’s a high-energy, fast-paced show that’s irresistible.

A different battlefield of history is conjured in Trying, the story of Judge Francis Biddle who headed the Nuremberg trials and was a keen observer of major 20th century events during his lifetime. The “give and take” between the judge and a feisty young Canadian woman hired by the judge’s wife to help with the writing of his memoirs reveals more than originally imagined. Absorb a bit of actual history based upon the playwright’s real life experience with Judge Biddle. July 29 through September 4.

A world premiere musical comedy, Servant of Two Masters is a hilarious piece by David McFadzean, former LPT staff member and the creator of TV’s Home Improvement. This show features classic physical comedy and zany themes. October 14 through November 20.

A varied and thought-provoking season is ahead at LPT, with tons of laughter and a few tears added. Plan ahead for the entire season or pick and choose. (619/437-6000, www.lambsplayers.org)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
