Published

Mingei International Museum (MIM) and the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) will present a panel discussion, Stories of Indian Women: Resistance, Resilience and Transcendence, on Tuesday, January 19 at 7pm in the Joan and Irwin Jacobs theater at MoPA in Balboa Park. A group of distinguished participants will explore the ways in which the two museums’ current exhibitions, SONABAI (MIM) and Beloved Daughters (MoPA), relate to women’s issues in India and throughout the world, sharing stories of resilient Indian women who have struggled with and often transcended adverse circumstances. Speakers include moderator Jenni Prisk from Voices for Women; presenters Carol McCusker, curator of photography at MoPA, and Stephen Huyler, curator of SONABAI; panelists Parminder Randhawa, educator and graduate student in peace and justice studies at University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, and Simarjeet Sahota, advocate for victims of domestic violence; and Uma Laksman of San Diego Nari, a support group for local Indian women. Tickets are $5 for members of MIM and MoPA, $7 for students, and $10 for non-members. There are no advance reservations. (619/239-0003, ext. 405, www.mingei.org/programs)
