Dont Miss The King

Published

It’s not too late to hear its roar — Disney’s The Lion King continues its San Diego run through November 8. What can be said that hasn’t already been said about this iconic show, which introduced innovative staging and remarkable use of masks and puppets into musical theatre? So creative was the staging, that director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical. Of course, the score featuring the music of Elton John and Tim Rice is known the world over, and is a huge factor in Lion King’s popularity.

A local tidbit: in addition to a stellar professional cast with solid performance credits, two San Diego natives are part of the Lion King touring company. Jared Tanner is the standby for Pumbaa, Timon, and Zazu. He grew up in Lakeside and El Cajon. Wardrobe assistant Gretchen Heidenreich attended San Diego State University and was an acting student at The Old Globe. (619/570-1100, www.broadwaysd.com)   DARLENE G. DAVIES
