San Diego Style

Published

The Costume Council of the San Diego Historical Society (SDHS) will celebrate the power of fashion when 200 stylish San Diego women lend their fashion treasures for one spectacular evening on September 17. The dresses (or hot pants or any other sensational outfits) will be displayed at a benefit reception at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. The final mix is sure to be exciting, with, perhaps, a Chanel next to a Rudi Gernreich, or Fortuny pleats mingled with paper dresses. Imagine fantasy, quirkiness, elegance, and innovation.

The party will not only launch the 20th anniversary celebration, but it will also build interest in the upcoming opening of San Diego Style, a major exhibition highlighting fashion’s great moments in San Diego. Timothy Long, curator of costumes at the Chicago History Museum, will serve as guest curator. The exhibit will feature 40 important ensembles from SDHS’ permanent collection, and will be on view from October 1 through April 1, 2010. (619/232-6203, www.sandiegohistory.org)   DARLENE G.
