Living On The Edge

Published

Seemingly unafraid, La Jolla Playhouse (LJP) tackles tough, knotty, and sometimes unpopular topics unflinchingly. Its Page To Stage play development program is much admired and eagerly awaited. Every production is a work in progress, which undergoes daily, indeed hourly, change during its run. Media critics are cautioned not to publicly critique these productions precisely to preserve the freedom from judgment that allows artists to flourish.

Enter the newest LJP program: The Edge, which produces and presents work that runs outside the subscription season and promises to be thought provoking, maybe uncomfortable, and expansive. Its first offering was the very ambitious Continuous City, which made extensive use of computer video technology, with many video screens integrated into the stage setting. Up next, Dogugaeshi, a work by a master puppeteer, will be performed June 10-14, and Hoover: Tanned, Rested and Ready to Rock (September 8-13) will deliver a reinvented Herbert (not J. Edgar) Hoover in a comeback not unlike that of Elvis in 1968. This second show is being helmed by director Alex Timbers with the Freres Corbusier troupe and a fresh script and songs by Michael Friedman. (858/550-1010, www.lajollaplayhouse.org) DARLENE G.
