CPO Joe Espinoza USN and Maj Armando Espinoza USMC standing by the Distinguished Flying Cross Painting

Flying High
Aviation heroes, recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross, were recognized recently at the San Diego Air and Space Museum, which is launching a new interactive exhibit in their honor. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a painting, donated by artist Ruth Mayer, which depicts 21 recipients, 11 from San Diego County, including Rancho Santa Fe resident General E. Yul Yoon. Honorees ranged from the late Hamilton "Mac" McWhorter, a World War II double ace, to U.S. Marine Corps Major Armando Espinoza who had just returned home from his fourth tour in Iraq. In an emotional moment, he presented a flag flown in Iraq by his squadron, the Red Dragons. Anthony J. Principi, the former secretary of veterans affairs, was the keynote speaker.

To commemorate its grand opening, over 250 guests were treated to a star-studded sneak preview celebration complete with sake, sushi, DJs, and a performance by members of Unwritten Law. L’Auberge Redeux
L’Auberge Del Mar reopened its doors recently after completion of the first phase of a planned $25 million renovation. General manager Michael J. Slosser noted the seven-and-a-half month redo was completed on budget and on time. "There’s no deadline," he deadpanned, "like the U.S. Open." Slosser’s 11-year-old son, Garrett, released white pigeons to mark the occasion as guests streamed into the new lobby, designed by Barclay Butera with the casually elegant look of a Hampton’s living room in a palette of chocolate and mossy green. "It’s meant to be a haven," says Butera, who also gave the inn’s 120 guest rooms a stylish new look. "It’s a great sophisticated place by the sea, but one where you can wander around — in your flipflops." The grand re-opening crowd mingled on the Waterfall Terrace, overlooking a 14-foot illuminated water feature, and the Bleu Bar offering cool drinks (and ocean breezes) around a fire pit. As servers passed mini lobster corndogs and fat scallops with artichoke and fava beans, executive chef Paul McCabe talked about L’Auberge’s sleek restaurant and wine bar opening in late October. Also to come, a 4500-square-foot freestanding spa that will replace the existing spa in December. (858/259-1515, www.laubergedelmar.com)

Fashion For A Cause
Fashion’s Brightest Moments, a fashion show benefiting the San Diego Rescue Mission, brought together the best of fashion, food, and philanthropy at The Westgate Hotel. Chaired and produced by Fashion Forward’s Leonard Simpson with Sally B. Thornton serving as honorary chair and Kimberly Hunt as emcee, the event supported the life-saving programs that the San Diego Rescue Mission provides to the homeless of San Diego. A runway show featured formal, casual, and swimwear trends for both men and women. Guests donned an assortment of unique hats and vivid clothing, and enjoyed boutique vendors, a silent auction, and a gourmet lunch. The San Diego Rescue Mission is one of the largest comprehensive rehabilitation centers for the homeless in California. Focusing on long-term treatment, it houses hundreds of men, women, and children and provides shelter, food, counseling, treatment, and work therapy.
