The entries poured in for this year’s Home Of The Year contest. We are delighted to reveal the winner as chosen by unanimous vote by a panel of SoCal-based design industry professionals.
The 2010 Home Of The Year is a breathtaking two-level concrete, steel, and glass residence inspired by its location at the head of Scripps Canyon, a narrow gorge that leads to Black’s Beach. Designed by John Pyjar, AIA of Domusstudio Architecture to fit into the natural topography, and built by Mitchell D. Burton Construction, a contemporary, open floor plan maintains ocean views from front to back through high ceilings and the use of floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors. Native plants, including two Torrey pines, dominate the landscape. A concrete wall stretches 168 feet from the front of the property through the house and out the back towards the sea.
Inside, a galley-style kitchen features a 19.5-foot-long Caesar-Stone countertop, shelves hidden behind sliding doors, and built-in appliances including a four-burner Wolf stove, two Sub-Zero refrigerator-freezers, two Dacor convection ovens, and a Fisher & Paykel drawer dishwasher. The counter serves as breakfast nook as well, and is elegant enough to be comfortable in the living area.
Incorporating unusual building materials and design innovations throughout, the children’s rooms, main laundry, and game room are in the basement, and a great room, guest room, and master bedroom/bathroom are upstairs. The great room encompasses the dining room, kitchen, and sunken living room. An indoor-outdoor space, the great room features floors paved in fossilized sandstone, which remain bare-feet friendly as a result of the living room’s ten-foot intense-heat fireplace and a radiant heat system in the floor. High ceilings and clean, hard edges are softened by caramel colors, Douglas fir-paneled ceilings, and cedar-scented hardwood walls.
The home also has an attached two-car garage and a detached three-car garage that is used as a “man cave,” complete with heated floors, a grease pit, flat-screen TV, and satellite radio.
The pool, spa, barbecue, and fire pit are buffered behind the great indoor space in a front courtyard. The room shields the pool area from the constant wind, and the glass walls on both sides of the great room allow for views back down the canyon to the ocean. The downstairs bedrooms open onto the backyard, showcasing one of the two Torrey pine trees.
