Words, according to 17-year-old Danny King, have the power to heal and help. The Canyon Crest Academy senior founded Speaking Out for Others, a nonprofit that provides a voice for the disadvantaged. “Our mission is to put on events that include public speaking and other forms of entertainment,” says King, “to benefit a specific charity that helps people who are in desperate need.” King recently reached the finals in the San Diego Imperial Valley Speech League Winter Tournament, and he believes that “words can change the world.” His own tip for public speaking? “I just try to speak from my heart.” On May 21, King and fellow classmates present a 12pm fundraiser at the L’Auberge Del Mar Amphitheatre to benefit the EyeMobile for Children at the UC San Diego Shiley Eye Center, which identifies, treats, and prevents vision disorders in low-income children. (dannymmk@yahoo.com)    ANDREA NAVERSEN
