Seize the opportunity to learn all about tornadoes — the people they attract, the scientists who study them, and the incredible spectacle they create. Opening Friday, March 18, at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Tornado Alley takes viewers on a journey with Sean Casey and his storm chasing crew into gale force winds, torrential rains, and unrelenting hail as they capture data for Vortex2, the premier scientific study to understand tornadoes. This ambitious project brings together researchers from diverse organizations to undertake one of the most complex and danger-ridden field campaigns of its kind.
In collaboration with the film’s opening — there is an exciting opportunity planned for the public to meet a scientist from the film and hear first-hand about her experiences and the making of the film. On March 24, visit the Fleet Science Center for a special screening of the newly released IMAX film with a special presentation by the films’ storm-chasing meteorologist, Karen Kosiba, PhD, who participated in the largest tornado field project in history and serves as senior research meteorologist at the Center for Severe Weather Research. Learn about the 16,000-pound armored Tornado Intercept Vehicle that carried the IMAX camera and its crew to capture the most comprehensive weather data ever collected. Tickets are $20 per person for either the 5pm or 7pm special engagement and include IMAX film and lecture. All ages welcome. (619/238-1233, www.rhfleet.org) JANE SHIOMI
