Thanks to support given to Lions Tigers & Bears by Ark Antiques, the McGrath Foundation, and private donors, construction of the new Black Bear Habitat is well underway. Telephone poles donated by SDG&E and installed by PAR Electric outline the three-acre parcel, which will be home to Liberty, the bear cub rescued last summer. Able to accommodate two bears right away, the enclosure will house up to five at buildout. Currently, Liberty remains in the quarantine area, which she is quickly outgrowing. Without further funds, construction may cease. LTB still needs to purchase fencing and the roof for the bedroom, and provide power. "The new habitat was designed to give Liberty all the things she would seek out in a natural environment — rocks, water, privacy for sleeping, and a large area in which to roam," says Bobbi Brink, founder and director of Lions Tigers & Bears. "At this stage if we could just get enough funds to finish the roof of the bedrooms, we could move Liberty into that larger area, while we complete the rest of her new home.” (619/659-8078, www.lionstigersandbears.org)
