It is designed as a place of healing and hope for the region’s sick children and their families. The new Acute Care Pavilion at Rady Children’s Hospital, a nearly 300,000-square-foot facility, opened to the public on October 10. From the whimsical Carley’s Magical Gardens, where young patients, parents, and staff can forget their troubles for a time, to the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, the pavilion provides both compassion and cutting-edge pediatric care.

The new facility adds 154 hospital beds (on floors with kid-friendly themes), making Rady’s the largest children’s hospital in California. The new Neonatology Care Unit has home-like private rooms and the Warren Family Surgical Center offers advanced surgical suites. The LEED-certified “green” building is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Inventive spaces, both indoors and out, feature the work of local artists. The Acute Care Pavilion is a gift to San Diego area children, described as a place where “state of the art” meets “state of the heart.” (www.rchsd.org)    ANDREA NAVERSEN
