Lux Art Institute in Encinitas recently released the schedule for another series of in-depth artistic explorations for budding artists ages 8-12. The program allows the children to work directly with Lux’s artists-in-residence to create art with similar concepts and materials while studying their process and pieces. This season’s artists will be bringing an eclectic and variegated mix of media and styles including sculpture, blown glass, and painting.

The kids’ enthusiasm for the program is reflected in the amazing pieces they create as well as in the vibe of the classes.  “I really like working with the artists. They use a lot of really cool things, like making trees out of metal. I mean, how cool is that, it’s nature, but it’s metal,” says Lucy of her work last spring with artist Robert Lobe, a sculptor whose signature adaptation of repoussé created elegant rocks and trees in shimmering, hollow forms using heat-treated, hammered aluminum.

Classes vary in duration from four to six sessions, all held on Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm at Lux with a limited class size. (760/436-6611, www.luxartinstitute.org)    ANN RADCLIFFE
