This summer, the City of Encinitas is adding its own beach lifeguards to the Junior Lifeguard mix, placing an emphasis on ocean safety, education, skill building, and competition in a program taught by highly motivated and experienced lifeguards. Lifeguard Sergeant Hans Fernan says, “We have put together a team of experienced JG [Junior Guard] instructors. We have taken our individual experiences and put them together to create a program that takes ocean safety/education and physical fitness, and combined them into a fun interactive learning environment — the kids will have a blast!” Morning and afternoon two-week sessions are offered all summer, beginning on June 21 at Moonlight Beach. Junior Lifeguards is open to 9-17-year-olds. The City is also offering a brand new program called Beach Kids for 7-8-year-olds. (www.encinitasrecreg.com)    JANE SHIOMI
