Last month we highlighted several local camps worth considering while planning your children’s summer activities. As a follow up to help you stay motivated, here are a handful of others worth checking out.
The Gifted Preschool sets up museum-like classrooms to study dinosaurs, outer space, and the Hawaiian Islands. Exciting and flexible weekly sessions are geared towards children ages two through six. A wide array of specialty classes feature music, piano, gymnastics, languages, science, math, reading, and more. (760/436-9666, www.giftedpreschool.com)
Santa Fe Montessori’s Summer Program is geared to feed curiosity. Teachers are trained to captivate young imaginations with materials that excite the senses and activities that energize young minds and bodies. Instructors engage children’s capacity to wonder and explore, and by doing so, nurture a lifelong love of learning. Presenting the Montessori curriculum is the primary goal, but the program includes an extra emphasis on exploring the school’s outdoor patio gardens with their rich variety of plants, and ample time for a ride on the tire swing. Since 1998, Rancho Santa Fe resident Kelise Ward has been teaching surfing at her Rancho Del Mar Surf Camp in Del Mar. “Now, many of the surfers who started with me are instructors who teach,” notes Ward. “I think it’s fantastic that these young people who learned to surf at our camp have had their first job opportunity from what they learned here.” Ward’s campers spend 15 minutes of surf yoga before every session, and after that “it’s all about the surfing and spending lots of time in the water.” Ward and her partner Seth Bloom offer participants ages five and up a unique experience, with one instructor for every two students. Sessions are offered June through September from 10:30am-1:30pm and 2-5pm Monday through Thursday for $340 per week or $85 per day. Private lessons are $100 and include photography by Betsy Royce. All instructors are CPR certified and emphasize ocean safety and awareness. The camp has a partnership with Surf Ride and provides wetsuits and surfboards. In Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse’s annual summer education programs, Young Performers’ Workshop (YPW) and the Conservatory, children explore their love of theatre and develop their talents. In YPW, which runs June 28 through July 23, students in grades 2-12 attend day-long sessions learning various aspects of performance, including acting, movement, musical theatre, and playmaking. These fun and interactive activities are designed for children and young people with diverse interests and varying levels of familiarity with theatre, so a broad range of students enjoy the program each year. The Conservatory program, which runs July 5 through August 13, is a pre-professional training program for high school students in grades 10-12. These students develop skills necessary for a career in professional theatre. Both programs are held at La Jolla Playhouse. “In an ideal world, summertime for students is about both fun and learning. La Jolla Playhouse’s Young Performer’s Workshop provides a program that is both tremendously enjoyable and that opens up the world of theatre and expression to young people, with all manner of skill building and discovery along the way,” notes La Jolla Playhouse education and outreach director Stephen McCormick.
