Locally-based Green Cruiser Inc. was founded by former Qualcomm engineering manager Ralph Simon, who developed his line component by component. The Green Cruiser Electric Bike boasts cutting-edge technology including lithium batteries and all-aluminum alloy frames, Shimano gearing, and unique “pedal assist technology” — handy for seniors and those with injuries. Models include a full-size fold-up version and a new three-wheeler (inspired by Simon’s 85-year-old mother, who pedals on days she feels good and uses the throttle when she’s not feeling up to the task). “Pedal assist takes 45-50 percent of the effort out of a hill, but riders still have to pedal and get exercise,” explains Simon. “Pushing health in our communities as well as trying to get more people out of their cars and helping to save the environment all in one — I can't think of a better job!” (800/408-2120, www.grncruiser.com) MIA STEFANKO
