While the drive up can be mildly therapeutic, travelers to Mammoth Mountain can take advantage of direct flights from LAX. From December 16 through April 24, Horizon Air will offer twice-daily nonstop service aboard 76-seat Bombardier Q400s. The quiet twin-engine turboprops offer generously-sized overhead storage bins, unobstructed under-seat space, and plenty of headroom. Prices begin at $59 each way.

For family-friendly lodging with all the creature comforts of your own home, consider the 450-acre Snowcreek Resort, renowned for its unique location at the southernmost edge of Old Mammoth and at the base of the Sherwin mountains. Owners and visitors can enjoy 360-degree views of the Sherwin, Mammoth, and White mountains, highlighted by Mammoth Creek, which weaves its way through the resort. Current specials include The Great Escape, offered through December 16, (excluding Thanksgiving weekend), which offers lodging starting at just $113 per night for stays of two nights and longer, complimentary access to Snowcreek Athletic Club, and more. In addition, Mammoth Mountain plans to open for the 2010-2011 season on Thursday, November 11. To celebrate, the resort will offer rates starting at just $85 per night November 10-13. When you hit the slopes, be on the lookout for newly added food trucks — err, snowcats — which will roam the mountain selling on-the-go food items including burritos, calzones, and stuffed churros. They’ll likely be the at base of Cloud Nine Express, the base of Roller Coaster Express, or at the bottom of Chair 23.

Mark your calendar — The Night of Lights returns to Mammoth on Saturday, December 18, at Canyon Lodge. Celebrate the magic of the holiday season with a winter lights show against the majestic backdrop of Mammoth’s ski slopes, complete with a dazzling firework show and torchlight parade.
