As fall settles over San Diego, you may already be wishing for the warmth and fun of summer. Look no further than Riviera Palm Springs, where summer seems to live on all year round.

A hot spot in the ’60s welcoming celebrities like Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, the resort underwent a $70 million renovation in recent years to update its facilities, further enhancing its Hollywood glam.

The main swimming pool provides a cool retreat from the desert heat and a great place to mingle with other guests. A DJ keeps the mood high with dance music while the Bikini Bar supplies frosty fruity drinks made with more than 50 rums and tequilas from around the world. Rent a daybed or cabana to secure a comfy spot by the pool. Expect a full house on weekends, with guests enjoying couples getaways, the camaraderie of friends, and a bachelorette party or two.

When staying at Riviera, dining at the resort’s Circa59 is a must. Step into the restaurant and instantly be transported to Old Hollywood in a room with high-backed red velvet booths and ornate crystal chandeliers. Or choose to dine al fresco on the air-conditioned patio, a wonderful way to take advantage of the desert evening without feeling as though you might melt. The charming and knowledgeable staff will provide expert recommendations from the restaurant’s wine list and the seasonal menu boasts a plethora of mouthwatering selections.

Start with the Heirloom Tomato Salad, a plate of the perfectly ripened fruits complemented by creamy burrata, basil, balsamic, and the wonderful texture and zesty flavor of haricots verts. Or opt for the Chilled Cucumber Gazpacho Soup, a magical combination with Dungeness crab, watermelon, jicama, and mint. For the main course you can’t go wrong with either the Roquefort-crusted Filet Mignon or the Rack of Lamb. For an outstanding vegetarian option or as a side, try the Potato Gnocchi. The summer’s pumpkin gnocchi wowed with crispy golden-brown edges. And if once you reach dessert, you feel like you cannot possibly eat another bite, you must make room for the Crepe Crème Brulee. In the morning, try the Breakfast Pizza with eggs, jack cheese, Canadian bacon, and Hollandaise on toasted flat bread.

Make time for the resort’s SpaTerre, specializing in luxurious cross-cultural treatments in a serene surrounding. Spend the evening enjoying themed orange cocktails (after Ol’ Blue Eyes’ favorite color) and delicious small bites in a relaxed atmosphere at the Starlite Lounge. Or head to Sidebar to dance the night away.

Summer lives on. And I’m sure that’s just how Frank would want it.    RINA VAN ORDEN
