Global HouseCall, founded by local resident Eric Fuller, was one of the few organizations chosen by former president Bill Clinton to exhibit at the CGI Exchange in New York. Aiming to broaden the reach of health care and lower costs, Global HouseCall is a new video telemedicine system that connects patients and doctors over cell phone networks in real time. Patients are seen on computer screens by doctors who receive transmissions through Web cam and video-enabled smartphones. Nurses, EMTs, and aid workers can concurrently transmit data from monitoring equipment as simple as USB enabled stethascopes and otoscopes, and as complex as EKGs from ambulances and aid stations. Those in attendance also included President Barack Obama, Usher, Ben Stiller, and Matt Damon.
