Athol Fugard, once characterized by Time Magazine as “the greatest active playwright in the English speaking world,” is the 2011 recipient of the Peacemaker Award, an honor bestowed by the National Conflict Resolution Center to recognize individuals and organizations for their creative and effective solutions to conflict in the world. This year’s ceremony takes place Thursday, March 10, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Fugard, a giant in literary and theatrical arenas, is a Del Mar resident and an adjunct professor at UCSD. While his work has been produced internationally, he has been active locally at La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego REP, 6th @ Penn, Carlsbad Playreaders, and Black Ensemble Theater. Among his notable plays are Master Harold...and the Boys, Boesman and Lena, and the recent and much heralded Road to Mecca. Fugard is the author of Tsotsi, the Oscar-winning best foreign film of 2005. This great man will be saluted for his commitment to justice and for giving voice to those who have none.
