As it is with most nonprofit organizations trying to survive today’s economic conditions, Palomar College Foundation is feeling the pinch of budget deficits and dwindling income. A ten percent cut in this year’s budget is especially troublesome since the school has also experienced a five percent increase in students, many of which are seeking financial assistance. Fundraising events, such as the upcoming Palomar Celebrates Cabaret Nights Gala, will help the Palomar College Foundation fill the gap.
This year’s 18th annual black tie event, set to take place on November 14, at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, will feature internationally known singer Mary Jaeb as the evening’s entertainment and KGTV Channel 10 television news anchor Steve Atkinson as emcee.
Included in the festivities will be the presentation of the prestigious Comet Award to three exceptional community leaders — Congressman/philanthropist Darrell Issa; Palomar College alumnus Warner Lusardi, co-founder of Lusardi Construction Company; and Palomar College instructional dean Wilma Owens for their ongoing dedication to Palomar College Foundation and the community. The Comet Award celebrates those outstanding leaders who have given freely of their time and energy to benefit the Foundation and the community-at-large.
“We are fortunate to have the support of caring individuals and businesses like our honorees, who have consistently contributed their time, energy and money to benefit the school and its student body,” states Palomar Foundation president-elect, Robyn Quaco. “Our supporters recognize that each dollar we raise helps to ensure that quality education benefits everyone in our community.”
For nearly half a century, several auxiliary groups have worked diligently to obtain funding for the foundation, which in turn, provides student scholarships, faculty grants, and special projects that help to insure student success. Revenue generated through the sale of individual and group tickets for this and other popular events have an immediate impact on individual Palomar College students as well as several campus programs. In addition, proceeds from the evening’s live auction will help fund student scholarships, which are especially in demand this year.
“We are all competing for business in our region. But when competitive business leaders can come together to support one cause, North County becomes a better place to live, work, and play,” says Kerry Ross, president of the Palomar College Foundation. “Special events such as the Comet Awards Gala provide an especially enjoyable opportunity for supporters to celebrate and raise much needed funds,” he continues.
