The inaugural Global Community Market will be held Saturday, September 5, from 9am-4pm in the parking lot of Poinsettia Village Shopping Center to allow the community to support low-income artisans, microenterprise programs, and fair trade vendors from around the globe. Examples of goods include jewelry made by at-risk women in Thailand and Uganda Acholi women, and sweaters knit by imprisoned Peruvian women. Additional featured items include goods by Burmese refugees living in San Diego, carvings made by Kenyan orphans, crocheted items by women from the Tijuana Home for Abused Women, and more. Organizations such as Not For Sale will provide information regarding the local and worldwide slave trade, and Generation for Justice, a high school student group, will offer a face painting booth for children. Acoustic music will be provided by North Coast Calvary Chapel. One-hundred percent of proceeds will support causes around the globe. (www.globalcommunitymarket.org) JANE SHIOMI
