Works of art by renowned watercolorist and calligrapher Grace Phillips will be on view October 5 through January 4 at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The South African artist and longtime San Diego resident is now stricken with Alzheimer’s disease. A special fundraiser to benefit the care of Alzheimer’s patients will be held on October 5, from 5:30-8pm, at Tippet Hall, Schaetzel Center, at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. The event will include a cocktail reception, and a silent auction and opportunity drawing featuring prizes including a roundtrip ticket for two to South Africa from New York or Washington, D.C. to Johannesburg or Cape Town. Twenty-five percent of every piece of art sold will benefit Scripps La Jolla’s Alzheimer’s patient care programs.
In addition, a short overview of the power of our olfactory senses will be presented by Sue Phillips, daughter of the artist and noted international fragrance expert who developed Tiffany perfume. Sue will highlight the correlation of scent, memory, emotion, taste, and smell and how sensory loss impairs life. In Sue’s recent article “Sensory Healing” for Glow Beauty Magazine with Robert I. Henkin, MD, founder of The Taste and Smell Clinic in Washington, D.C., Henkin estimates that there are more than 21 million people who cannot smell or taste as a result of four or five common problems, one of them being Alzheimer’s. He reiterates that the expression “stop and smell the roses” can lead to a more enjoyable and healthier lifestyle. In recognition of Grace and in support of all Alzheimer’s endeavors and the Scripps Wellness Program, Sue will take guests on an olfactory “journey,” in which they’ll enjoy and discover the magic of their sense of smell.
Guests will also be able to purchase a limited edition copy of the award-winning poster of the Herbal Abecedarium designed and created by Grace, which features every letter of the alphabet in Grace’s calligraphy and watercolors while showcasing an artistic explanation of the various herbs and spices used for culinary and fragrance purposes. Several lucky winners whose names are drawn from the RSVP list will be eligible to win this prized poster.
The Custom Perfume session requires registration to participate and includes discovering 18 exquisite fragrance blends. Guests will select their preferred blends to create their own signature fragrance and will receive a certificate of registration. Those wishing to purchase their custom fragrance creation will be offered a special price of $95, of which 25 percent will be donated to Scripps La Jolla’s Alzheimer’s patient care programs. Grace Phillips’ exhibition celebrates her lifetime achievement in art and is sponsored by her children, Geoff Phillips and Sue Phillips, to honor their mother. Grace has exhibited her award-winning art globally, and has designed calligraphy for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and many international dignitaries with her illuminated addresses. Her art reflects her love of botanicals and calligraphy as well as early South African works featuring African portraits, landscapes, fauna, flora, and rooftops painted throughout her travels. Sue and Geoff are thrilled to be sharing their mother’s works of art and to help raise funds to try to eradicate this disease and the trauma that Alzheimer’s brings to patients.
