The fourth annual Survivor Beach brought together some 300 participants — surfers, cancer survivors and their families and friends, nurses, researchers, and other supporters — who placed 176 surfboards in a line stretching 1,425 feet as the precursor to the Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center Luau and Longboard Invitational, set for Sunday, August 22. Since its founding 17 years ago, the Longboard Luau has raised more than $4.7 million to fund groundbreaking cancer research at the Moores UC San Diego Cancer Center. The invitational will take place at Scripps Pier in La Jolla beginning at 7am. A ceremonial conch will be blown at 11:30am to signal the beginning of the luau, which will feature a buffet, live music, traditional Polynesian dance performances, and live and silent auctions. The surfing competition is free for viewing by the public; a ticket to the luau fundraiser is $150. (858/822-0023, www.longboardluau.org) JANE SHIOMI
