Forget the traditional oven-roasted turkey, and don’t touch the deep fat fried version either. This year, San Diegans will learn all about mouthwatering turkey dinners prepared in the Big Green Egg, the world’s best ceramic smoker and grill, at Egg Fest on Saturday, November 7, from 10am-3pm. Hosted by Fixtures Visions for Living, a luxury kitchen, bath, and outdoor showroom in the Miramar design district, San Diego Egg Fest will offer the whole family a day of delicious Thanksgiving-related foods and recipes, a chef cookoff competition, cooking advice, and lots of fun.
More than 20 Big Green Eggs will be fired up and roasting a variety of turkey recipes and trimmings. Highlights of the event will include a cookoff competition between regular “Joes” and local celebrity chefs as they attempt to cook the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Participating chefs include members of the Cooks Confab such as Paul McCabe of Kitchen 1540, Jack Fisher of Jack Fisher Confections, Antonio Friscia of Stingaree, Jason Knibb of Nine-Ten, Jeff Jackson of The Lodge at Torrey Pines, and Christian Graves of Jsix Restaurant.
Each chef will offer his or her own spin on a Thanksgiving meal cooked in a Big Green Egg, designed to not only cook delicious meats but also breads, pizzas, and other amazing foods. All the foods served will be locally grown or farmed and the proceeds from ticket sales will support Slow Food Urban San Diego, a local chapter of the national organization Slow Food International dedicated to raising public awareness and encouraging the enjoyment of foods that are local, seasonal, and sustainably grown.
Affectionately called “Egg Heads” for their dedication and passion for cooking on the Big Green Egg, fans of the cookers love to gather and share recipes and cooking tips. Egg Fests have popped up around the country, yet this is the first one for San Diego.
“We are proud to host San Diego’s first Egg Fest to allow everyone to share in the fun. I am very passionate about the Big Green Egg and use mine all the time,” notes Phil Roxworthy, Egg Head and president of Fixtures Visions for Living. “Last year for Thanksgiving, I roasted a turkey rubbed in a chipotle and spice mix in the Big Green Egg, as well as roasted the vegetables for my chorizo cornbread stuffing. That’s the kind of great meal you can cook in the Egg. I’m excited to share recipes and learn from the fantastic chefs who will join us. There will be something for everyone.”
The festive family-oriented event provides a good opportunity for someone thinking about buying an Egg to learn all about it and see firsthand the versatility of the intriguing ceramic cooker, as well as hear about experiences from current owners. The Eggs that are cooked on at the event are for sale at a discount. Guests will also be able to take advantage of special discounts on the Big Green Egg grills and accessories during the event.
An entrance fee of $25 will permit guests to enjoy all they can eat, participate in all the fun activities, enjoy music, get BBQ tips and holiday turkey recipes, and receive a San Diego Egg Fest T-shirt (while supplies last). Kids 11 and under are free. (858/966-3600, www.fixturesliving.com)
