On Wednesday, September 23, at 11:30am, Del Mar Country Club presents a sumptuous afternoon of delicacies of every variety including afternoon tea and Champagne, a fashion show hosted by Neiman Marcus featuring the latest collection from Escada, a trunk show with exquisite jewelry from Judith Ripka, and a reading and book signing by Gesine Bullock-Prado, who will be sharing the delightful story of her transformation from Hollywood executive to Vermont baker. The sister of actress Sandra Bullock, Bullock-Prado had a closet full of designer clothes and the ear of all the influential studio heads, but she was unhappy. The only solace she found was in her secret hobby: baking. With every sugary, buttery confection to emerge from her oven, Bullock-Prado took one step away from her glittery, unfulfilling existence — and one step closer to her true destiny. Before long, she and her husband left the trappings of their Hollywood lifestyle behind, ending up in Vermont, where they started the gem known as Gesine Confectionary. And they never looked back. Bullock-Prado’s book, Confections of a Closet Master Baker, chronicles their journey and is filled with eccentric characters, beautifully detailed descriptions of her baking process, ceaselessly funny renditions of Hollywood nonsense, and recipes. Her story will appeal to anyone who has ever considered leaving the life they know and completely starting over.
