The annual Family Insect Festival at Quail Botanical Gardens takes place July 11-12, from 10am–4pm. Guests are invited to celebrate bugs at this one-of-a-kind festival during which children can practice bug collecting, hands-on insect arts and crafts, and can even taste cooked mealworm larva. Entomologists and other bug experts will be available for questions and information. The traveling educational program “Wonders of Wildlife,” will be on hand with a variety of live animals, such as an opossum, a pig, and a fennec fox, all who are connected to bugs in some way or another. Admission is free for members and children 12 and under; non-member admission is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors, military, and students. (760/436-3036, www.qbgardens.org) JANE SHIOMI
