Encinitas Holiday Parade

Published

Thousands of people will be on floats and in bands with tens of thousands more cheering them on as the 2013 Encinitas Holiday Parade rolls along Coast Highway 101 on Saturday, December 7. The parade begins at 5:30pm, and is preceded by a 5pm tree lighting ceremony at the Lumberyard (near Starbucks coffee).

This year’s parade theme is “Growing Holiday Cheer,” celebrating Encinitas’ rich agricultural history, from flowers to fruit trees, and everything in between. “Come on out and cheer as nearly 100 parade floats and entries make their way down the parade route on Historic Coast Highway 101. The Parade has been a 50 year-plus Encinitas tradition for Encinitas area residents,” recreation supervisor Nick Buck states. “One of the great things about the parade is that we have something like 3,000 children in the Parade. That means that we have all of those parents, grandparents, and friends along the parade route enjoying the show and showing their support. It’s a great event and the perfect way to kick off the holidays in Encinitas.”

This year’s Grand Marshal selection is Evelyn Weidner. Talk about a “green thumb,” Weidner even has a Begonia named after her! A longtime fixture on the Encinitas flower scene, and an icon in Encinitas’ growing history, Weidner will lead the nearly 100 entries down the 101 in this year’s parade.

Don’t stress over finding a parking space downtown, take advantage of free parking shuttles that run from Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas off of Santa Fe Drive (just look for the signs pointing you there) or from the YMCA/Ecke Sports Park parking lot on Saxony Road.  Both shuttles start running at 4pm and go until 8:30pm.  The ADA accessible bus runs from the Scripps location.  Shuttles run approximately every 20 minutes and will drop you off at the NCTD bus station on Vulcan Avenue, just a half block from the parade route. (760.633.2760, nbuck@encinitasca.gov)
