Sink your teeth into Shark Week at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, taking place July 18-24. The exhibition features hands-on exploration for all ages into the world of the shark, one of the most mesmerizing and misunderstood predators on our planet. Come face to face with more than ten local shark species and their relatives, and learn about their vulnerabilities and the conservation efforts being made to save their declining populations. Activities include live shark encounters with hourly presentations, videos of sharks in the wild, scavenger hunts, a great white photo booth, and special dive shows in the two-story dive tank focused on different aspects of the shark.

On the evening of July 22, the aquarium will show a special screening of Requiem, an award-winning documentary that follows an underwater photographer as she journeys beneath the ocean in the Bahamas, Hawaii, Tahiti, and Mexico to uncover the true nature, beauty, and power of the shark. The film will be followed by Q&A with Scripps’ shark experts. (858/534-FISH, http://aquarium.ucsd.edu)   MASON RICHEY
