San Diego County Bicycle Coalitions Holiday Joy Ride

Published

San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, an organization that advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles, hits the streets with winter cheer for its Holiday Joy Ride on Thursday, December 12. Tickets are $10 for members; $15 for nonmembers, and $25 to become a member. (www.sdcbc.org)

Sponsored by Car2Go, the third annual evening ride begins at SILO in Makers Quarter (753 15th Street), encourages festive costumes, and features a “light-your-bike” ride — where bicycles strung with Christmas lights and wrapped like presents parade through town.

The colorful parade ride starts at 5:30pm and returns to SILO for a hosted reception with beer donated by New Belgium Brewing. The evening will include a presentation honoring the winners of the Bicycle Coalition’s Golden Gear Awards for going above and beyond to make San Diego more bicycle friendly in 2013.

“With the first-ever CicloSDias, SANDAG’s approved spending on bicycle infrastructure, DECO bike share implementation and multiple bike projects in the works, 2013 has been an incredible year for bicycling in San Diego and deserving of an equally incredible celebration,” says Andy Hanshaw, executive director of the Bicycle Coalition. “We’re looking forward to continuing this holiday ride tradition and recognizing some exceptional community members who played a big part in the Bicycle Coalition’s monumental year.”

Last year Interim Mayor Todd Gloria received a Golden Gear Award as Public Partner of the Year for his significant impact advancing bicycling in San Diego in 2012. This year the Bicycle Coalition recognizes one winner in each of the five award categories:

• Volunteer of the year
• Advocate of the year
• Public Partner of the year
• Community Partner of the year
• Bike Friendly Business of the year
