Home Design Trends 2013

Published

You’ve heard it before: New year, new you. But don’t forget about your home — it needs a freshening-up, too. We asked a few experts how to go about it.

Invigorate Interiors With Color

From pared-down to maximilist, any style of interior can be spruced up with a pop of color, pattern, and texture. “Colors, including neutrals, are abundant right now,” says Robin Wilson Carrier of Robin Wilson Interior Design. “Grey is used in combination with brighter colors, such as yellow and teal, or in a tone-on-tone combination with ecrus and whites.”

Also popular at fabric houses, according to Carrier: large-scale patterns and menswear suiting in vibrant combinations of red, blue, green, teal, orange, yellow, and hints of magenta grounded by neutrals. Luxuriously tactile textures and metallics will continue to be prevalent.

To stay totally on trend, look no further than Pantone’s “It” color for 2013: emerald green. “Interior designers often get their cues from the fashion runways,” says Carrier, who is the San Diego ASID president. “We’ve seen emerald green on the red carpet in stunning gowns and jewelry and expect to see it in home décor as well.

Invest In Your Outdoor Areas

Speaking of color: Does your landscape have enough of it? Mark J. Sterk of Columbine Landscape has made a name for himself creating gorgeous swaths of green — it is the color, after all — with plenty of eye-catching plants in complementary hues. “Lately I’ve been really drawn to golds and oranges,” he says. “And I’m still excited about succulents.”

As for green in the eco sense? Sterk emphasizes the importance of climate-friendly landscaping, but says longevity is key too. “Most people only think a few years down the line. We design our gardens to last and improve for years — or hopefully decades!”

For instant outdoor gratification, on the other hand, Sterk says new lighting is always a bright idea. He’s partial to Aurora Lighting, a Carlsbad-based maker of handsome solid-copper landscape lighting. “You’d be amazed at the difference it can make.”

Incorporate Art In Unusual Ways

Don’t limit yourself to what’s hanging on the walls when it comes to collecting original art. Why not sit on it? Local contemporary impressionist Concetta K. Antico recently won “Best Use of Textiles” from the ASID San Diego chapter. Her vintage furniture line features existing pieces that have been refinished and upholstered with sturdy fabrics that she exquisitely paints by hand.

“The theme of recycling and repurposing has carried over into art and design,” says Antico. “Instead of always trying to create a new piece of furniture or use brand-new materials, artists are looking at antique furniture and family heirlooms for inspiration.”

By working with skilled artisans, consumers can turn a beloved-but-dusty object into something decorative and worthy of passing down to the next generation. “One design trend that never goes out of style is surrounding yourself with beautiful images and furniture that have significant personal meaning,” says Antico.    ANNAMARIA STEPHENS
